Everybody knows that America declared its independence in 1776. But the young republic was far from one indivisible nation of the United States. Here is the unforgettable story of fifty-five men and the constitution they created in 1787 to give the struggling new government a foundation that has held strong ever since. The book has four-color illustrations, charts. It can be purchased separately and as part of literature packs (see Related Items below). From the Book:
Right away the delegates began to argue. The members from small states thought the Virginia Plan was unfair. They wanted each state to have the same number of representatives. Other delegates were afraid to let the people choose the President. They felt that ordinary citizens would make a bad choice. The delegates argued for weeks.
