This syllabus, written by Hewitt staff, is for those who wish to use the Best Series. Nonfiction and poems are studied the freshman year, short stories in Grade 10, chapters from novels in grade 11, and Shakespeare plays the senior year. Besides the syllabus you will need

This year the student studies the short story. The book covers such aspects of story as plot, characters, conflict, symbolism, theme, figurative language, and tone. The student will read three short stories each quarter and write two papers on each story. Paper options include research papers, fiction, opinion essays, descriptive writing, and story analysis. In addition, the student will write one book report each quarter. Recommended (not required) literature for book reports at a regular reading level for Grade 10 are The Scarlet Letter, Frankenstein, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Hobbit; at the advanced level they are To the Lighthouse, The Iliad, Gulliver's Travels, and 1984. Finally, to allow the student to practice what was learned about short stories, he will write a 7- to 10-page short story throughout the course of the year. If your student is advanced, you may wish to use Vocabulary from Classical Roots and Write for College.

Hewitt's high-school syllabi are written with our enrolled students in mind. Students not enrolled in our program would not find the math, science, or health syllabi helpful; but other syllabi, such as our English ones, could prove helpful to parents/students working on their own. Syllabi do not include answer keys, and submitted work is not graded except for enrolled students.
